10. Bastion

Bastion iOS, the reimagined version of the charming 2011 action role-playing game which received over a hundred of industry accolades was selected by Apple itself as one of the “App Store best of 2012” picks, and rightfully so. With its unique varied and picturesque hand-painted visuals, original musical score, variable difficulty suitable for all skill levels, lengthy campaign, and approachable yet complex RPG mechanics, Bastion won over millions of hearts of mobile gamers worldwide, us included.

Behold Studios’ Knights of Pen & Paper is role-playing in its purest form. Inspired by the 90’s cult classics and board RPGs, this retro pixel-art mobile game was met with universal acclaim from both critics and players alike. Though some of the games on this list will be more or less appealing to different kinds of mobile gamers, we could almost guarantee that everyone will like Knights of Pen & Paper, an RPG with almost infinite replay value.

Symphony of the Origin by Kemco iPhone 5 gameplay screenshot high resolution

8. Symphony of the Origin

Traditional mobile JRPGs are Kemco’s specialty, and to this date, Symphony of the Origin is the best iOS title they’ve ever created. Though it’s by far the shortest mobile game on this list, SotO is still well worth getting, and you can find out why exactly in our January’s review of it. Since it’s on sale every few weeks, you can often purchase it for only 99 cents, so stay tuned on PGR’s discount section to find out when the next opportunity for that pops up.

7. Chaos Rings II

Though Square Enix publishes a lot of externally developed video games, both mobile and otherwise, they usually refrain from doing so in the JRPG domain, mostly because that’s their (Final Fantasy) dominion. So, when a traditional 3D JRPG series based on an original IP gets published by them three years in a row, it has to be something special. Needless to say, it is. Media Vision’s Chaos Rings II is the latest sequel in the Chaos Rings series and is by far the most visually impressive and content-filled iteration of it so far. Serious mobile gamers that are able to pay $15 for an iOS RPG really shouldn’t miss this one out.

6. Final Fantasy Dimensions

Square Enix is one of the first big shot video game developers who jumped on the mobile gaming boat more than a decade ago, and after 10 years of developing original mobile JRPGs, it came up with Final Fantasy Dimensions, its crown achievement. Take a look at our FFD review to find out why is this game a must-have for all iOS RPG aficionados, or simply make the right call and get it at the link below.

5. Final Fantasy III

Though it’s not an original mobile game like Final Fantasy Dimensions is, Final Fantasy III is still our pick for the best portable JRPG of all time. Charming, content-filled, and unforgiving, FF III is a sure bet for all core mobile gamers and it’ll certainly be a while before Square Enix releases a better iOS title. In case you want to find out more about it, check out our last year’s detailed review of the game.

Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition by Overhaul Games iPad gameplay screenshot

4. Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition

Overhaul Games’ remake of what’s according to many one of the greatest video games, or at the very least hack ‘n’ slash role-playing games ever was released on the iOS App Store last year and was met with universal critical acclaim. In case you’re too young and/or haven’t played it back in 1998, this game is practically a must, and even if you did, enhanced visuals, extra features, and convenient portability should be enough to persuade you to purchase it once again. Unfortunately, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition has recently been taken off of the App Store due to some unknown licensing issues, but don’t worry – it should be back online soon enough. When that happens, you’ll be able to find it at the link below:

3. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

This iPad port of another cult classic just recently hit the App Store and despite being a decade old, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic withstood the test of time. We’ve already explained everything there is to know about the iPad version of this Bioware’s RPG in our recent review of it, but the short version is – SW: KOTOR is worth much, much more than the $9.99 it’s currently going for. Get it, play it, love it.

Ravensword - Shadowlands by Crescent Moon Games iPad gameplay screenshot (Carnosaur-Dinosaur)

2. Ravensword: Shadowlands

By far the best Crescent Moon Games’ title to date, Ravensword: Shadowlands is practically TES V: Skyrim - The Mobile Game. Though not exactly innovative, what it lacks in creativity, Ravensword: Shadowlands makes up for in execution. This open world action RPG is not only one of the best of its genre, but it’s also one of the most ambitious mobile games ever released, and compared to most other titles on this list, it’s relatively cheap. You can find out why in our last year’s in-depth review of it.

Infinity Blade II iPhone 5 gameplay screenshot by Chair Entertainment and Epic Games

1. Infinity Blade II

Powered by Unreal Engine 3 and developed by the creators of the said engine, Epic Games and Chair Entertainment, Infinity Blade II is one of the most entertaining, visually impressive, and action-packed mobile games to date. By creating a game that’s neither open world nor linear, its developers managed to deliver a balanced and unique mobile gaming experience that will hardly be surpassed anytime soon. Given that Infinity Blade II is currently priced ridiculously low, you simply can’t miss the chance to get it for only 99 cents.
